Russell Group response to R&D budget partner allocations

14 March 2022

In response to the confirmation from BEIS of how the R&D budget for 2022-2025 will be allocated between partner organisations, Dr Tim Bradshaw, Chief Executive of the Russell Group, said:

"The UK is a world leader in research and innovation, delivering huge benefits for the country both economically and socially. The rising public funding for R&D confirmed in today’s allocations show the Government’s ambition to build on those foundations, providing an opportunity to invest in the discovery research that will be fundamental to UK’s future as a science superpower.

"Russell Group universities look forward to playing a central role in turning this investment into new knowledge, ideas and talent which will be vital to driving a strong, sustainable recovery and to tackling transformational issues such as delivering Net-Zero.

"We are also reassured by the confirmation that any funding required for association to Horizon Europe or an alternative will come from a separate ringfenced budget rather than the central allocation to UKRI and the national academies, which will help protect critical funding for the UK’s research base and provide researchers and academics with the long term stability they need."
