Priorities for a future skills-based immigration system

22 July 2019

People and ideas are the key to meeting great, global challenges, which is why our universities strive to recruit the most talented staff and students from around the world. Nearly 48,000 staff and 200,000 students at Russell Group universities are non-UK nationals, representing 26% of staff and 31% of all students.

International staff and students bring huge benefits to our campuses, local communities and the UK economy. To secure these benefits, the UK’s future immigration system needs to support universities to attract and retain students, academics and technical experts from anywhere in the world.

The Russell Group supports a skills-based approach to immigration policy. This policy briefing sets out our recommendations to enable the Government to build a world-class future immigration system that can build public confidence, grow UK skills and attract global talent.
