UKRI strategic prospectus

15 May 2018

Commenting on the publication of the UKRI strategic prospectus, Russell Group Chief Executive, Dr Tim Bradshaw, said:

“We are pleased UKRI have published a strategy that emphasises their future commitment to dual support, recognises the importance of excellence in research, and reaffirms the intention to work in consultation with stakeholders, including universities.

“As the strategy highlights, universities are often those best-placed to identify and invest in new opportunities for research and innovation, whether it be fundamental science or working with business and public-sector collaborators. The dual support system is one of our greatest assets underpinning the success of the UK research base, empowering universities to explore those new opportunities and develop future research and innovation talent.

“The economic benefits of a well-funded research base cannot be underestimated, but the wider social, cultural, health, environmental and other benefits must not be overlooked too.

“The Government has set an ambitious target to boost spending on R&D in the UK to 2.4% of GDP by 2027. We look forward to working with UKRI to ensure that funding is used efficiently and effectively, promoting a research environment in the UK that allows new ideas, pioneering innovations and talented people to flourish.”
