Russell Group response to APPG report

06 November 2018

Responding today to publication of the Report by the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for International Students, Dr Hollie Chandler, Senior Policy Analyst at the Russell Group, said:

"We welcome the recommendations made by the APPG today, which aim to ensure the UK continues to be one of the best places in the world for globally-mobile students to study. The APPG’s report echoes many recommendations made by the Migration Advisory Committee nearly two months ago, including that the UK Government should set an ambition to grow the number of international students studying here, which we wholeheartedly support.

"Growing the number of international students clearly depends on the UK having an attractive and competitive offer and, as the APPG highlights, an important part of this offer are the opportunities available to graduates to transition to work once their studies are complete. This is an area where the UK is lagging, and we hope that Ministers will seek to address this by improving the UK’s post-study work offer at the earliest opportunity.

"Alongside this, we would urge the Government to consider the importance of having a proportionate, streamlined system for student visas. Making visa applications straightforward, user-friendly and cost effective will help improve student experience and generate a welcoming image of the UK.”
