New ministerial appointments

10 January 2018

Commenting on the new ministerial appointments announced by the Prime Minister, Russell Group Chief Executive, Dr Tim Bradshaw, said:

“I’d like to congratulate Damian Hinds and Sam Gyimah on their respective appointments. We look forward to forging a constructive relationship with the new ministerial team and working together to address the major challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. The UK has a world-class higher education system that is vital to the future of the country in terms of skills, social mobility, research and innovation . It’s reassuring that Sam Gyimah will, like his predecessor, be joint Minister of State at the Department for Education and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy. This should help maintain the vital links across teaching, research and innovation policy.

“I’d also like to welcome Caroline Nokes to her new role as Immigration Minister. Russell Group universities are home to more than 200,000 international students and 42,000 staff from outside the UK. They contribute enormously to the sector’s success in research and innovation as well as to a thriving society, culture and economy. We look forward to working closely with her and the Home Secretary to ensure the immigration system is doing all it can to make them feel welcome and support one of the UK’s most successful export industries.”
