HEFCE philanthropy review

Commenting on the HEFCE Review of Philanthropy, Dr Wendy Piatt, Director General of the Russell Group, said:

“We welcome this report on the role of philanthropy in higher education. Our institutions are increasingly reliant on philanthropic giving as we strive to remain world-class while budgets are being cut. Russell Group universities have been successful in raising funds and are committed to securing funds from a diverse range of sources.

“It’s important the Government continues to recognise the importance of charitable giving through the tax system and seriously considers the recommendation in the report on capital tax relief. But philanthropic giving cannot, and should not, replace funding from the government and other sources for the core activities of universities.”
