GCSE results 2016

25 August 2016

Commenting on this year’s GCSE results a Russell Group spokesperson said:

“Congratulations to everyone receiving their GCSE results today.  We hope students got the grades they wanted and are now thinking carefully about the next steps in their education.

“It is really important that young people — especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds - have clear information about how the subjects they study in sixth form or college can affect their options at university.

“Our student guide Informed Choices provides advice on the best subject combinations for a wide range of Russell Group university courses, as well as the best choices for students who want to keep their options open.

“Our universities are constantly trying to spread the word that with the right grades in the right subjects a place at a Russell Group university is well within reach. But students need good advice and information from a range of key sources.

Modern languages

“It is worrying to see yet another fall in the number of students studying modern foreign languages at GCSE-level, following on from the fall in A-level entries last week. Languages are vitally important to the UK if it is to be fully engaged with the world.

Science

“However, it is encouraging to see an increase in students taking separate sciences. We know that pupils who take the separate science GCSEs are more likely to take and excel at STEM subjects at A-level, so it is good news that more students are taking the opportunity to study individual sciences."

Notes to Editors

Our guide Informed Choices, first published in 2011, is put together in collaboration with the Heads of Admission at the 24 Russell Group universities and includes advice on the best subject combinations for a wide range of university courses as well as advice on the best choices for students if they don’t know what they want to study after school and need to keep their options open. It can be found on our website here.
