Announcement of a new 'start-up' visa

13 June 2018

Commenting on the Government’s announcement of a new ‘start-up’ visa, Russell Group Senior Policy Analyst, Dr Hollie Chandler said:

“We’re pleased that the Government is looking for ways to welcome entrepreneurs to the UK and universities are looking forward to more detail on how the scheme will work in practice.

“Just as we need to attract talented international entrepreneurs, we also need to encourage those who spend time at UK universities to stay.

“That’s why the Russell Group is calling for the Home Office to build on the current graduate entrepreneur route. Under current rules, budding entrepreneurs who graduate from our universities have to apply twice: once for their first 12 months and again to extend their stay for a further 12 months.

"Allowing these individuals to apply once for a 24-month visa would give them and their investors greater certainty, helping more of them set up their businesses here in the UK.”
