Ultrafast computing at Glasgow

Drawing major international investment in high-performance computing to a world leading research centre

The Ultrafast Systems Group at Glasgow University is one of the world leaders in compound semiconductor transistor technology.  The group’s internationally-renowned expertise has seen it secure research funding from a variety of sources, both domestic and international, through government, research councils and business.

In 2007 the group entered into a £1.2m partnership with the US Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), a consortium of multinational electronics companies including IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Intel.  The three year project will explore ways to replace existing silicon chips.  By increasing the speed of processing, the new chips will speed up computers, enhance the battery life of mobile phones and digital cameras and improve graphics in computer games.  These advances could be available to manufacturers by 2010 and in large-scale production by 2016.
