The Russell Group aims to ensure that policy development in a wide range of issues relating to higher education is underpinned by a robust evidence base and a commitment to civic responsibility, improving life chances, raising aspirations and contributing to economic prosperity and innovation. Our work engages with key public policy areas including the economy, industry, the labour market and R&D; tax, welfare and public finances; children and families; regional development; public services and education from early years’ provision, schooling and further education to workforce development.
The Russell Group (RG) is now looking to recruit researchers of varying degrees of experience and expertise to work across a range of projects.
Key elements of the role for all researchers/policy analysts
- Engage in high quality research and analysis with a range of outputs including articles and reports
- Identify potential barriers to policy change and work to develop innovative, evidence-based solutions
- Produce high quality, succinct briefing papers on relevant issues
- Help organise meetings, for example by identifying the right speakers or roundtable participants
- Be a valued staff member at the RG with a willingness to work across teams and programme areas
- Assist Senior Research Fellow and/or Director-General in achieving the objectives of the RG
Additional responsibilities for senior research fellows/policy analysts
- Manage projects and outputs
- Ensure close relations are fostered with key partners & stakeholders
- Represent the programme and the organisation externally, including public speaking and appearances on the media
- Contribute to the strategic vision for the RG programme
- Work directly to the Director-General
- Organise meetings and seminars
- Take a lead in developing policy solutions
Person Specification for all researchers/policy analysts
Previous knowledge/experience
- A degree - second degree desirable
- First class research skills
- Ability to write in clear, concise English essential
- Entrepreneurial attitude and evidence of initiative
- Good level of numeracy essential
- Strong time management and ability to manage own workload
- Attention to detail
- Self starter
- Ability to think creatively
Additional requirements for senior research fellows
- Minimum 2-years research experience
- Excellent project management skills
- Good knowledge of domestic policy and practice (& ideally of higher education but not essential)
- Experience of working in the Civil Service, academia or think-tanks is desirable
- Confident and capable communicator, both in writing and orally
- Network of contacts in relevant field desirable
- Able networker with diverse groups including academics, policy makers and relevant stakeholders.
We are more than happy to consider applicants who wish to work on a flexible basis eg part-time, from home on certain days etc and can accommodate a variety of personal circumstances.
The salary for research fellows is between £22,000 and £38,000 with senior researchers starting at £40,000 and going up to £50,000 depending on experience.
