Russell Group appoints new Head of Communications

30 March 2009

The Russell Group of leading research-intensive universities has appointed Donald MacLeod as its new Head of Communications.

Donald MacLeod joins The Russell Group on 19th May from The Guardian where he is the editor of the education website EducationGuardian.co.uk. He has reported on education for more than 20 years, previously working at The Scotsman and The Independent before moving to The Guardian in 1993.

During his time at The Guardian he has edited the education supplement and was responsible for the paper’s higher education coverage throughout a period of major change in the sector.

Commenting on his appointment Donald MacLeod said:

"How could anyone resist a job promoting some of the best universities in the country, and indeed the world? I welcome the opportunity to put across how our world-class universities have a positive impact on the UK economy and society. This is all the more vital at a time when these universities face difficult economic circumstances and unprecedented global competition. It is essential that key decision makers and the wider public understand the importance of supporting our leading universities so they can continue to provide world-class research and an excellent teaching and learning experience for students.”

Director General of the Russell Group, Dr Wendy Piatt, added:

“I am delighted that Donald – who has such a wealth of experience in the media and such a wealth of knowledge of the higher education sector – will be joining the Russell Group team. Now, more than ever, it is vital we effectively communicate the importance of leading universities in promoting economic prosperity and social well-being and crucially, helping the UK emerge stronger from this economic downturn. Donald will also play a key role in challenging preconceptions and busting myths about Russell Group universities by promoting the rigorous analysis and evidence-based policies which underpin the work of the Russell Group organisation.”
