University of Birmingham bids to set up new secondary school and sixth form

The University of Birmingham is hoping to extend its excellent academic education to 11-18 year olds in Birmingham and is preparing to submit plans for a new free school to the Department for Education.If approved, the new University of Birmingham School and Sixth Form school will be a mixed ability, co-educational state school for pupils aged 11-16 plus sixth formers. It will be based near to the University's main campus in Edgbaston/Selly Oak and focus on academic rather than vocational subjects in order to prepare pupils for selective universities. The School aims to open in September 2014, taking 150 pupils into Year 7 and 200 into the Sixth Form.

University's TV 'sperm race' helps to unlock mysteries of procreation

University of Birmingham reproductive medicine expert Dr Jackson Kirkman-Brown invites a group of male students to take part in an experimental 'Sperm Race' to explore what it takes to be the best out of millions in the BBC3 documentary How Sex Works tonight.

University of Birmingham appoints Alice Roberts as first Professor of Public Engagement in Science

Clinical anatomist, author and broadcaster Alice Roberts has been appointed Professor of Public Engagement in Science at the University of Birmingham. Alice, who regularly appears as a science presenter on TV programmes including Coast, Time Team and Horizon, as well as The Incredible Human Journey, Don't Die Young and Origins of Us, joins the University on 1st February, 2012.
