Reform report on widening access

05 September 2017

Responding to the Reform report, Joining the Elite, Sarah Stevens, Head of Policy at the Russell Group, said:

“This demonstrates the long-term commitment our members are making to ensure students with the qualifications, potential and determination to succeed at a leading university have the opportunity to do so.

“Individual universities face different challenges, and tailor their approach to admissions, access and widening participation accordingly. What may prove to be successful at one institution may not work so well at another due to differences in institutional and regional context as well as differing student characteristics. It is therefore important that institutions retain their autonomy to decide what works best in their particular context.

“Our members recognise the importance of monitoring and evaluating the impact their support has for disadvantaged students and are increasingly involved in efforts to share best practice. The availability of better data as recommended by the Reform report would make tracking the achievements of students much easier.”
