Keeping technology and skills ship-shape at Southampton
From a research collaboration to continuing professional development with a marine engineering company
Research at the University of Southampton has led to a productive strategic partnership with a shipping manufacturer – spanning research, consultancy and skills development.
Halyard specialises in noise reduction systems for boats and yachts. In 2003, the company initiated a research project with the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research at Southampton to investigate the key elements of noise generation on boats.
The research identified marine exhaust systems as being the key culprit, and developed a novel noise measurement device, which allowed Halyard to gain an advantage over its industry rivals.
The research project also highlighted the need for more training in noise reduction devices for Halyard employees, so Halyard asked the ISVR to develop a bespoke course for its sales and development staff. Offered in a flexible format, the course has enabled staff to apply technical expertise to an early stage in the design process, and customer satisfaction has improved, with clients evidently impressed by the technical knowledge of Halyard staff. The company was recently rated 9.3 out of 10 for customer satisfaction in this area.
